High Tech Hole In 1 Golf Project
Overview
In the High Tech Hole in One Golf Project the 10th grade was split into teams in order to research historical events that were displayed in obstacles on a golf course that each team created. This project required us to use skills we had learned from each of our classes. In Humanities, each person researched and wrote an essay on a specific event in history that somehow connected to a main event that the group had chosen. In Math, we used geometry and measurement to design and build our golf courses. In Multimedia, we designed logos and planned all aspects of the exhibition.

Humanities
For the Humanities portion of this project, we studied and wrote essays on different events in history. My group chose the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution began in England in the late 1700s as a result of the Agricultural Revolution. The Agricultural Revolution transformed the sufficiency of farming, which increased the amount of food and the population of Britain. This revolution transitioned between hand, human, and animal powered tools to machines. In order to create these machines, England needed raw materials such as iron and coal from natural land deposits. The use of machines in the Industrial Revolution increased the production of goods through new inanimate energy sources, thus increasing social and economic standards of daily life for citizens. This led to the rise of capitalism and in response, communism. England's new innovations and ideas were the beginnings of technological progress that spread throughout Europe and the world. |
Although this was my groups main historic event, my specific topic was the Maxim Machine Gun, the first automatic machine gun in the world. My group focused on influential inventions from the Industrial Revolution that are the reason we are so technologically advanced today. Below is a link for my essay on the Maxim Machine Gun.

Math
This portion of the project included using geometry to create our courses. My group and I wanted to develop a course that had a lot of angles, and at the end of the project our course seemed to be one of the most difficult to complete. One math aspect of this project was finding a way to get the golf ball through the course and all of its obstacles in as few hits as possible. Below is a copy of my math blueprint that shows the exact lines my hypothetical golf ball followed to get to the hole.

Multimedia
At the beginning of this project we created logos that represented our project on Adobe Illustrator. The logos were put up around the room for a gallery walk with three possible names for the project, the eventual winner was Alicia Dukes with the title, High Tech Hole in 1 which you can see down below. The main Multimedia aspect that I worked on was the documentary which can be viewed at the bottom of this page with a small excerpt.

Building Process
For the building process, my group was responsible for creating our golf course, building six obstacles to go on the course, and designing costumes for our group members to wear in the informational video. A lot of our time was spent building our obstacles, this took a lot of time for some of my group mates because they would finish their obstacles and then they'd break and have to be redone. At the end of the project our obstacles were very good at keeping eager golf players from finishing our hole in time for us to explain the historical significance of each obstacle. Once my obstacle was completed I spent most of my time on the documentary.
Obstacles
Each person was required to design and build one obstacle that represented their historical event to go on the golf course. My obstacle was shaped like a canon and launched the golf ball into the air and onto the other side of the course. The metaphorical significance was how the bullets from the Maxim Machine Gun shot from Europe to Africa and how the Africans were easily imperialized by many European countries. My obstacle had a ramp and Plexiglas so the person playing our course could actually see where their ball was going. Below are pictures of each obstacle that my group members and I made.

Exhibition
Our exhibition was a huge SUCCESS! There were so many people playing our courses that I couldn't even see across the room clearly. Everyone enjoyed playing our courses and learning about the history of each obstacle.

Documentary
I was one of the main people who worked on the documentary for the entire project. Everyone in my group did an amazing job shooting footage and making sure to document important parts of the project. I became extremely proficient in Final Cut Pro and had an amazing time working with Mandalyn Kime on this documentary. I hope you like it!
